Category:Free software programmed in CIn the spring of 2012, Julie Rhea was a year into a serious relationship when her boss at the Santa Fe Trail Chamber of Commerce asked her to be the maid of honor at his wedding.
The night before the ceremony, she and her fiancé attended a small party at the home of the wedding couple’s best friends. At the end of the party, the bride and groom asked Rhea to dance. She accepted.
She hadn’t thought much about the fact that her ex-boyfriend was the groom’s best man — but it didn’t take long for Rhea to realize that he was. “I wasn’t comfortable with that,” she says. “I walked over to him and said, ‘I know we are not together, but I would appreciate it if you could not dance with me tonight.’” He agreed and the couple danced separately.
Rhea was also uncomfortable being the best man’s “date.” “It just didn’t feel right to me,” she says. “I felt I had to have a role in that. I didn’t want to be a date for him.”
There was another issue: “I knew that my fiancé and my best friend had a history,” she says. “So I didn’t feel comfortable getting in the middle of it.”
She did not tell her fiancé that her ex was the best man. But, she says, “He knew the difference between me and him in a professional setting. He knew the difference between me and him as a friend.”
Last month, in the midst of a public feud between the two former lovers, Rhea decided that her fiancé needed to know. The morning after Thanksgiving, she called her ex and “said, ‘You need to know I’m your fiancé’s best man.’”
